The Great Kentucky Stash Debate: The Thirty Day Supply vs. The 10-Day Rule!
Hello, friend! Welcome back to Kentucky Cannabis Docs! We know that diving into the world of medical cannabis can feel like learning a whole new language especially when it comes to limits!
We want you to feel totally confident, compliant, and comfortable on your journey. Think of us as your friendly, knowledgeable co-pilots. We're here to listen, answer your questions, and make sure you understand the two magic numbers in Kentucky: 30 and 10. Why two numbers? Because the Commonwealth of Kentucky, under SB 47, has different rules for what you can have at home versus what you can have on the go!
The 30-Day Supply: Your Cozy Home Base (The "Pantry" Limit)
The 30-Day Supply is the maximum legal amount of medical cannabis you can possess at your place of residence. Think of this as your fully stocked pantry the place where the bulk of your medicine lives, safe and sound. You are allowed to purchase this amount within a 25-day period.
To keep your pantry stocked and compliant, remember these maximum limits:
For Raw Plant Material (AKA Flower or Dry Herb), your total limit is 112 grams.
For Concentrates (like high-potency oils, vape cartridges, or concentrated extracts), you can possess up to 28 grams.
For THC-Infused Products (including edibles, tinctures, drinks, and syrups), your limit is measured by the total THC content, which can be no more than 3,900 milligrams of THC.
The 10-Day Supply: Your Travel Buddy (The "Pocket" Limit)
The 10-Day Supply is the maximum legal amount you can carry with you outside your home (on your person, in your vehicle, etc.). This limit is your portable, grab-and-go amount, and it’s about one-third of your total 30-day limit.
When you leave your residence, the maximum you can have on your person is:
37.5 grams of Raw Plant Material.
9.5 grams of Concentrates.
1,300 milligrams of THC in THC-Infused Products.
Real-Life Scenarios: Making Sense of the Rules
The main difference between the limits is location: the 30-day supply stays at home, and the 10-day supply is what you travel with.
Here are a few practical examples to keep you fully compliant:
The Big Haul: If you just picked up a fresh 30-day supply from the dispensary, you are allowed to transport the full amount, but you MUST drive it straight home and follow the specific transportation rules.
Running Errands: You are headed to the grocery store, then the bank. You should only have an amount that fits within your 10-day supply (e.g., one vape cartridge and a small amount of edibles).
The Non-Countables: You can carry a full container of medical cannabis lotion or a topical salve without it counting against either your 10-day or 30-day limit—non-consumable products like ointments, soaps, lotions, and other topical agents are exempt!
Weekend Trip: If you're staying overnight anywhere outside your residence, the total amount you pack must not exceed the 10-day limit for the forms of medicine you bring.
The "Two-Move Rule" for Transportation
Speaking of driving, the golden rule for transporting your medicine is that it has to be locked down.
It must be in its original container from the dispensary.
It must be out of reach and require two (2) moves away from the driver.
Example: Imagine you're driving and suddenly want your medicine. If you have to unbuckle, reach behind you, un-zip a bag, and then grab the container, you’re good! If you can reach it with one swift hand motion from the center console, you are not compliant. Keep it zipped up in a bag in the trunk or backseat.
THE BIG ONE: NO SMOKING
You are allowed to purchase Raw Plant Material (Flower/Bud), but legally, you cannot consume it by lighting it with a flame. The consumption methods must be non-combustible.
YES: You can purchase Raw Plant Material to be used in edibles, salves, and especially with Dry Herb Vapes (vaporizers).
NO: You cannot legally burn raw plant material with a flame.
